Il mwbamegabelodonte (gen. mwbqmwbgMegabelodon) è un mwbwmammifero estinto, appartenente ai mwcaproboscidati. Visse nel mwcqMiocene superiore (circa 9 – 7 milioni di anni fa) e i suoi resti fossili sono stati ritrovati in mwcgNordamerica, in particolare in mwcwNevada e mwdaNuovo Messico.cite-ref-1[1]cite-ref-2[2]

Descrizione

Questo animale era simile agli odierni mwgaelefanti, ma il cranio era molto diverso, e soprattutto la mwgqmandibola aveva un aspetto peculiare. In generale, la mwggmorfologia del cranio ricordava quella del ben noto mwgwmwhaGomphotherium, con due zanne superiori relativamente corte e leggermente ricurve verso il basso. La mandibola era priva di zanne, ma era dotata di una mwhqsinfisi allungata e non appuntita, con la parte distale leggermente espansa. Quest'ultima era caratterizzata da una scanalatura simmetrica e ruvida nella sua superficie dorsale.

Classificazione

Il genere mwiaMegabelodon venne descritto per la prima volta da Barbour nel mwiq1914, sulla base di resti fossili ritrovati in mwigNebraska; la mwiwspecie tipo è mwjamwjqMegabelodon lulli. Altre specie attribuite a questo genere sono mwjgmwjwM. minor del mwkaNevada e mwkqmwkgM. joraki del mwkwNuovo Messico.

mwlqMegabelodon era assai simile a mwlgmwlwEubelodon, e anche meglio conosciuto di quest'ultimo, a causa del rinvenimento di due scheletri completi. Secondo alcuni autori (Tobien, 1973; Shoshani e Tassy, 1996) mwmaMegabelodon sarebbe un sinonimo di mwmqGomphotherium;cite-ref-3[3] tuttavia, altri autori rimarcano la notevole differenza nella mandibola tra i due generi. In ogni caso, mwngMegabelodon doveva essere parte di un mwnwclade di mwoagonfoteridi piuttosto specializzati, privi di difese inferiori.
